Well this weekend and yesterday were a ton of fun! It's good times when you have 8-month old twins in daycare, let me tell you! Never a dull moment!
Sebastian has had a perpetual cold since June 1, the day he started at daycare. And Adrian has avoided the never-ending stuffiness that Sebastian has suffered, but has had a fever and viral infection twice. So there have already been numerous calls and visits to the pediatrician. I find it extremely difficult as a new mom to know when to call and when to wait it out. I think I'm getting better at it, but unless you can identify an ear infection on your own at home, I guess it's hard NOT to call when they've been sick for more than 48 hours.
So anyway, last week I took Sebastian to the pediatrician and discovered he had an ear infection. He was fussy eating and was waking up numerous times at night (which he never does). We put him on amoxicillin. Then on Saturday morning, Adrian woke up with a fever. Adrian in particular, however, was just not himself. That boy is so flirtatious and smiley all the time, that you notice IMMEDIATELY when something is not right. Sebastian is more high-need to begin with, so it's harder to tell when he's just being fussy and when there's something wrong.
We started the Advil regimen that we're used to by now, but Adrian's temperature was not down by Monday morning, so we called the pediatrician to bring him in for a check-up. Sebastian was fever-free and seemed ok so we brought him to daycare. At the pediatrician, we were waiting for the doctor and received a call from Sonia at the daycare...Sebastian had a rash on his bum and legs and she was nervous it was an allergic reaction to his amoxicillin. (A few months ago I had a sinus infection and was taking amoxicillin. Turns out I'm allergic!! I broke out in hives all over my body...) So while we were at the pediatrician with Adrian, we made an appointment to come back in an hour with Sebastian to have his rash checked out.
The doctor examined Adrian and discovered that he, too, had an ear infection, and prescribed amoxicillin for him as well. When we brought Sebastian back to the doctor, it turned out his ears are 100% now ("pristine" was actually the word used by the doctor), and his rash was nothing but a viral rash. It's normal after you've had a virus and the person is not contagious by the time the fever and rash show up. So, he went back to daycare and Adrian stayed the rest of the day at home with us.
Today both boys are at daycare....we'll see how it goes. They went off happier in the morning, but they definitely still aren't themselves. Both boys have a sort throat (they cry when they cough), and they won't eat solid food right now. It seems to burn or irritate when they swallow.
I LOVE our daycare, and I know this is to be expected. Par for the course. But it sure does suck for the boys and for us!!!
