Mexico 2013: Part Two

Picking up where I left off (Monday at Carla's house and putting poor Lexi down), Tuesday must have been a quiet day because I don't even remember what we did.  I think we went to Valle Oriente (mall) with Carla and Luis and family.  After that we went to La Purisima to an expo of Mexican artesania.  We bought a shirt as a gift and nothing else.  Then we had elote from La Purisima--my favorite!

Wednesday was a fun day.  We had a family photo shoot in the morning with a good friend of Carla's.  His name is Alan Flores, and he takes AWESOME pictures.  He's taken photos of Alejandro Saenz, and he is scheduled to shoot Elena Poniatowska soon.  We started at his studio at 9AM, but the boys were NOT cooperative.  And, the weird thing was, it was Adrian who was being a total poop.  He would not sit and didn't stop crying for Alan.  He did manage to snap a few photos of Sebastian and one or two of Adrian before we gave up and went to a park for some outdoor photos.  I will post the photos from the photo shoot in a separate post--there are over 250 of them!!  They came out amazing!  After we were done in the park, we went back to the studio to meet the rest of Carlos's family.  Alan then painstakingly took photos of each family with Carlos's parents.  Best of all, we now have photos of Carlos's parents will all 7 grandkids, and photos of the grandparents with all three of their children and their kids (three generations).  Very nice!

In the afternoon, we met Carla and Luis and Beba at Club del Lago, a swim and tennis club near the house.  They are members and were able to get us al passes to hang out there for the afternoon.  It was a very nice club--clean and well-maintained with a ton to do.  There was a shallow pool for toddlers, big pools for lane swimming, a wave pool, a water slide, grills, playgrounds, basketball courts, tennis courts, and probably other things that I didn't see.  The boys swam for a bit in the wave pool (their ear plugs and head band wouldn't stay on their head, so that was a disaster) and then I went off to play some tennis with Luis.  It was almost 100 degrees I'd say, or at least in the 90s, and humid, so I lasted about 20 minutes!  In any event, it was great to just hit a few balls again.  I haven't played since I worked at Duxbury, over 5 years ago!

There was an awesome play area just for kids the boys' age.  They had fun running around in there with the cousins!

Thursday, Sebastian had a fever and Adrian a nasty cough so we took them to a doctor at a pharmacy that is owned by a relative of Carlos.  The doctor was not a pediatrician, but practiced general medicine, and we were anxious to have the boys seen by someone to avoid issues on the plane ride home Saturday.  The doctor discovered a "throat infection" in both boys and a very mild ear infection in Adrian.  He prescribed a 3-day course of some antibiotic, cough syrup, and tempra (a fever reducer).  I did not think the antibiotic was necessary--I was pretty convinced Sebastian had a virus--but in some ways I was happy to have it just in case--I didn't want to take chances on the plane ride!  I was suspicious about cough medicine as we don't give that in the States until a much older age.  But I figured there are kids in Mexico, too, and if this is what they do there, then we'd go along with it.

After the doctor, we met our dear friends Carlos and Yolanda for breakfast at our favorite taco place.  It was so nice to see them!  It was too bad we didn't get to see Domy, their daughter, but she was off at daycare already.  We saw her at the boys' party on Saturday, and she is such a sweet, cute little thing!

Yolanda is an extremely creative person and wonderful artist.  She has made us nice things from day one.  These pictures were her gift to the boys on Saturday.  LOVE them!!!

At lunch time on Thursday, we went to Sirloin Stockade with the rest of the family and some cousins  to celebrate Carla's birthday.  We were there for a while and then headed to the other big mall, Plaza Fiesta, just to walk around.  Then we went home and played, put the boys to bed, and went out for dinner with Carla and her friends for her birthday.

There was definitely a lot of eating going on last week!!

Friday was a day of getting organized, doing last minute shopping, and packing.  We had lunch at the house with Carlos's dear friend Licenciado Hernandez, his wife, his daughter, and her son (9 months old!).  My father-in-law made ribs and potatoes that were to die for!  Then we packed up the cars and headed to the Holiday Inn Express near the airport.  Our flight left at 6:45am on Saturday morning and we didn't want to wake the boys up at like 3:30am or drive so early in the morning on deserted roads for safety reasons.  (Although, I will say, the security this time seemed much much much improved from the last time I was there 3 years ago and there were men with machine guns everywhere and helicopters circling our neighborhood.)  We put the boys to bed and Carlos went across the street to dinner with his family.  I actually stood in the bathroom and played solitaire on my iPhone while the boys fell asleep--it was a low point!  ;)  I couldn't be in the room or they wouldn't have fallen asleep, and I couldn't leave the room either, so I was stuck in the bathroom!  A few hours later Carlos returned with dinner for me....I also had to eat it in the bathroom!  Gross!!!  But it was worth it because the boys slept soundly in the hotel room and got a decent night's sleep.

The next day, Saturday, nothing was delayed and we flew first class to Dallas.  The boys slept the entire flight.  In Dallas, the only hiccup was that the damn American Airlines lady in Monterrey who issued our boarding passes didn't put that we had infants on our lap on our boarding passes to Boston.  So when we tried to go through security they wouldn't let us pass because we didn't have passes or anything that referenced the boys.  We had to go back to the check-in area and wait in line to have our boarding passes re-printed.  We had a 3 hour layover, but after going through immigration, customs, dealing with this boarding pass issue, going through security, taking the train to the right terminal, and eating a quick bite, time flew!  We didn't have any extra time.

The boys were amazing on the 3 hour flight home.  They played and slept and were angels.  They couldn't have behaved any better.  We had a great flight attendant in first class who memorized all of our names.  She was great with the boys and very attentive.  It will be hard to go back to coach after this experience!!!!!

When we got to Logan, Carlos picked up the luggage and I took the boys with me in the stroller on the bus to the economy lot where we left the van.  When we picked up Carlos he had all of our luggage (phew--everything arrived!), and we headed home.  My mom met us at our house with Cape Cod pizza and Greek salad, and she had made lemon poppy seed bread and left milk, yogurt, and cinnamon rolls in the fridge.  What a great mom!!!

It was nice to go away, but nice to come home as well.  The boys really were superb and met the challenges thrown at them.  I was so pleased with them.
