Roof Troubles!

With all the tropical weather we've been having, we had some water damage in the master bedroom ceiling.  It was not much of a stain--it's about the size of a quarter--but it's in a spot that had been patched because there was previous water damage.  Carlos was in denial that we had a problem, but the stain was brown and soft to the touch so I knew something was going on in the attic.  We borrowed our neighbor's ladder a few weeks ago, and I got as close to getting in the attic as I could (there's like 3 feet of insulation up there and it's impossible to walk!).  I was able to see that some of the wood around the vents was black, probably from water damage.  But I didn't know if it was from the recent rain or if it was from an old problem.

In any event, we made a few calls to local roofing companies.  We ended up with Ferreira Co., a Brazilian guy out of Taunton.  He was the most professional of the guys we got to give us estimates.  He showed up right on time, gave me a folder full of information (including a copy of his license and all his contracting licenses), and took pictures of all the damage on the roof to show me.  It turns out nearly every vent on the roof seemed to have a hole or a leaky spot around it--and there are about 5 vents on the roof!  His price....$1200, but he said he'd do it for $800 and send one guy instead of 2.  The guys that work for him are all Mexican!  I looked him up online and he had all positive reviews.  We knew that the roof on this house is old when we bought the house, but we were also told we'd probably get at least another few years out of it.  So we were happy that Adriano (the owner of the company--another good omen!) thought that he could save the roof and just make a few minor reparis for now.  So we decided to go with his company and get the roof taken care of.  I don't to mess around with water damage, collapsing ceilings, or mold in the attic insulation.

He took pictures of the damage beforehand and showed them to me.  Then they also took pictures while working and of the finished product.  I think he did a nice job!

And here's the house from the front with the repairs.  You can see the patchwork, and the roof is discolored in many spots because it's so old, but we're not going to put in a new right now roof just now for cosmetic reasons!  Too expensive!  If we can get a few more years out of this one (at least until the boys are in Kindergarden!), I'll be extremely happy!
